PRESS RELEASE
Date: June 10, 2019
When it opens on December 20, 2019, Nayara Tented Camp will be one of the first luxury camps in Central America. Located in the Arenal Volcano National Park, the year-round Camp is the brainchild of owner Leo Ghitis who was inspired by the luxury canvas lodges of Africa and Asia. The low-impact, high-yield design that immerses guests in the surrounding rainforest was developed by Luxury Frontiers, an experiential lodging expert with a global portfolio of design projects that extends from Mexico and Tuscany to Botswana.
The 29 air-conditioned accommodations, each generously sized at 1,496 square feet, have been built at a higher altitude on the hillside to provide unobstructed views of the volcano. Multigenerational travelers and like-minded groups can opt for a set of two identical tents that connect with a covered passageway while couples and privacy-seeking guests can book standalone units. Also dotted around two acres of rainforest at the peak of the mountain are seven interconnecting, private hot springs that can be enjoyed by six to 15 nature lovers. Rates start at $1,200 per night.
The indoor/outdoor design of the Camp blends contemporary, barefoot-luxe touches and unique-to-location design features: a master suite created as a nod to traditional African safari style tents fused with a Costa Rican sense of place; canopy beds with a botanical headboard mural; private plunge pools fed by natural mineral hot springs; and double-head outdoor showers. The color palette aptly showcases tree bark tones, shades of green, and touches of leather. With the addition of the Camp, Nayara will consist of three properties, including Nayara Springs and Nayara Gardens, all of which are connected by footbridges.
“With the opening of the Tented Camp, we are excited to boost Nayara’s presence in Costa Rica,” noted Leo Ghitis. “Luxury is in the details, and our work with Luxury Frontiers in the last three years focused on every single design element to optimize a genuine sense of place. Our efforts included the reforesting of the surrounding area, increasing the number of Cecropia trees to further nurture our sloth sanctuary, and even custom-dying 8,000 meters of canvas for the tents.”
Commenting on Luxury Frontiers’ first foray into the Americas, CEO and Founder Luca Franco noted, “Nayara Tented Camp is part of the ever-growing experiential travel movement, and it elevates Costa Rica’s adventure and nature-based hospitality products. We are thrilled to collaborate with Leo Ghitis who has always shared our brand’s ethos for implementing sustainable business practices, integrating lodging projects into their natural surroundings, supporting local communities, and embracing new cultures.”
Nayara Experiences
Nature lovers can participate in sloth sanctuary tours and early morning bird-watching walks with Nayara’s expert nature guide and ‘Sloth Concierge’ Juan Pablo. Through Nayara’s reforestation of the area, the new tented camp will expand the property’s sloth sanctuary to over 1,000 Cecropia tress (the sloth’s main food source) from the current 300 trees that currently serve as a home to more than 15 sloths.
Just a short stroll away from the spas, pools, and six restaurants of the sister resorts, guests can relax with daily yoga and meditation suspended above the trees, or wake up with rich, Costa Rican coffee beans. The new espresso bar, Mi Cafecito, was created in 2018 with the consultancy of master roaster Ken Palmer, who trained alongside Alfred Peet of Peet’s Coffee; the company shares similar sustainability values with Nayara as a leading responsible coffee purveyor. Guests can stop by for a morning cappuccino or stick around to learn the bean-to-cup process, creating their own custom blend to take home.
Nayara’s nature guides can also take more intrepid travelers off property to explore the surrounding Arenal region. Beginning with a hike through the Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, guides will lead guests through the rainforest. A surprise picnic (with personalized lunch) is then set up atop a hillside with postcard views of the volcano for a midday break, before more adventures such as trekking over the dried lava fields of the volcano, soaking in the thermal waters of the EcoTermales, or visiting the nearby mom-and-pop coffee farm where Nayara sources their beans.
